Weird and Wonderful Lawn Mower Stories

Occasionally we come across some funny, strange and downright risky stunts involving lawnmowers, so here is a selection of our favourite odd lawn mower shenanigans from around the globe. We start with some examples of improvisation involving lawn mowers and one item you might not expect to find in a garden. Needless to say – please do not try any of these at home!

A man in Ireland was spotted trimming his hedges with a lawnmower, as he did not have a hedge cutting tool. Although the lawnmower did the job, we wouldn’t recommend anyone trying this at home as it could cause serious damage to the engine and the blades, not to mention the risk of flying debris in all directions. Another innovative chap in Brazil turned a household blender into a string trimmer, using the rotating motion of the blender unit to turn the strimmer head which makes for a surprisingly effective garden tool. Again, this is a risky move as there is no safety shield around the unit to stop flying stones and other debris, but you can’t deny the ingenuity of the invention.

A riding lawnmower becomes the centrepiece of a huge slip and slide in America, where the mower is tethered to a post in the ground and drives in a circle around the post. Surrounding the mower is a huge sheet of plastic, covered in soapy water and this is where the participants slide around, holding on to a water-ski line attached to the mower. As the riding lawn mower goes around the post at speed the centrifugal force spins the slip and sliders around the plastic sheet, eventually spinning off when the person lets go of the line. It does look like great fun but we would urge anyone thinking of doing this to ensure the terrain is good and flat, and also to wear shoes when operating the lawnmower. The most impressive thing about the video is that it was shot on a smartphone, evidenced by the sequence with the selfie stick!

Throwing things at a lawnmower seems to be the latest craze, as shown by a group of youtubers who tried to create art by throwing spray cans into the blades of a lawnmower that had been placed on its side. The first couple of cans are shredded with ease and the paint thrown across a waiting canvas, but the fourth can ignites (although the video does show a lighter hidden at the side, so it is debatable as to whether the fireball is caused by this or the can – either way it’s dangerous) and melts the canvas from the frame. This group is known for making viral videos so it is no surprise that they went for the shock factor. Again – don’t try this at home!

A more controlled version of the same thing sees an inverted electric lawn mower deck used to destroy various items and filmed in slow motion, allowing the viewer to see how many pieces objects such as keyboards, bottled water and a digital camera break into when dropped into a lawnmower. You may not have thought about what effect a lawnmower blade would have on these items, but it is strangely gratifying to have the answer anyway.

We’ll leave you with a tale (or perhaps tail?) of a dog riding a lawnmower that distracted a news crew preparing a serious story about hurricane destruction. Anchor Andrea Martinez was in the middle of her piece when she spotted the labrador perched perfectly on the seat of the mower, paws on the wheel as if he was about to drive off. The sight was so funny that the whole crew stopped and watched as the dog stared back at them, presumably wondering what was so funny about a dog about to mow the grass.
