Why self-propelled lawnmowers are easier

There’s one main difference between a push mower and self-propelled lawn mowers. With self-propelled mowers – the motor does most of the work for you! So, all you must do is guide the mower where it needs to go. With a push mower, the motor spins the cutting blade and effort is required.

Self-propelled mowers will save you time and more importantly effort and energy. You can cut through thick grass with a self-propelled mower without extra effort, because the mower mechanically moves forward through even the most challenging areas in your garden. And mowing across areas that have a slight gradient does not require any extra push.

The traditional walk-behind push mower is powered by you! Push mowers require you to move the mower forward with no help from technology. Our range of self-propelled mowers take the hard work out of mowing your lawns. With easy-to-use controls and a transmission that powers the drive wheels, you can effortlessly mow. That’s why the preferred walk-behind lawn mower for many people is a self-propelled mower, getting the job done faster.

Single speed models are designed with a mid-range ground speed suitable for most people and cutting conditions. Gardeners or professionals wanting a broader range of ground speeds to accommodate a specific walking pace or various other cutting conditions should consider a variable speed mower.

You do not have to trade mower features if you choose a self-propelled model. Nearly all models can be used to discharge grass clippings to the side or into a bag.  Many mowers also offer mulching with a mulching plus as a further option.

Today’s self-propelled mowers are easy to start with automatic choke systems on engines that allow you to start the engine cold. Some users prefer engines that start with no priming or choking at all, and the technology on self-propelled mowers continues to advance to make using a mower more user-friendly than ever before.

Whether you’re cutting a large area or a modest sized lawn, a self-propelled mower offers ease, convenience, and choice. You can enjoy mowing your grass with a self-propelled mower—and since the mower does all the hard work, you’ll still have energy left afterwards to enjoy your green space.

Self-propelled mowers are available in single and variable speed models. They work by engaging a speed control lever (sometimes part of the handle; sometimes a separate bar), that causes the mower to move forward. You don’t have to push the mower, just simply walk behind it, guiding it around the lawn.

Self-propelled mowers can be front-, rear- or all-wheel drive. Front wheel drive models are easy to operate and allow you to turn the mower by simply tipping the front wheels back and lifting them off the ground. They are ideal for flatter lawns. Rear wheel drive tends to provide better traction when mowing across slopes in a back-and-forth (vs. up-and-down) pattern. Mowing across the face of slopes is the safest way to cut grass on a gradient. Rear wheel drive mowers are most effective when used with a box since the weight of the bag can sometimes cause the front end to rise as the grass box fills ups.

Which lawnmower model is best?

At Mowers Online we offer a range of mowers with different engine sizes and cutting widths. Here are the most popular ones we recommend form the Mountfield range.

The Mountfield SP164 is a great entry-level price at £199.00 and has a 123cc engine.

The Mountfield SP46 self-propelled mower has a 46cm cutting width, power drive and steel chassis. The steel deck is hardwearing and easy to maintain. Powered by a 4-stroke Mountfield petrol engine the SP46 will be powerful yet economical to run. Although this is an economy model the 4 wheeled Mountfield SP46 has many great features including folding handles, single point cutting height adjustment and 60L fabric grass bag.

One of our best sellers, the Mountfield SP185 is a 46cm rotary petrol lawnmower which benefits from a robust, powder coated steel chassis, has 3 in 1 mowing options and self-propelled drive. Fitted with a Mountfield ST140 OHV engine (139cc), the SP185 offers performance and fuel economy, with a reliable recoil starting system.

The Mountfield SP185 has 3 options for your grass cuttings; the large 60 litre grass collector ensures you have minimal interruptions; with removal of the grass box the grass cuttings are ejected out of the back of the mower; when the mulch plug is installed the grass clippings are reduced into a fine consistency that will break down into a nutrient-rich fertiliser for the lawn. It’s ideal for lawns up to 1600m².
