Lawnmowers cut more than just grass

We are all for lawnmower safety, but there are some people out there who will always want to take risks and go too far, but as long as they are filming it and uploading it to the internet we may as well take a look and satisfy our own curiosity without putting ourselves in danger.  The question of what will happen when you introduce household items to the spinning blades of a lawnmower is one that many people will never have thought of, but two groups of people, one in the UK and one in America, have decided to get a definitive response on that riddle.

A group of British lads turned their lawnmower over and chucked all manner of food into the spinning blades to see what happened.  Filmed in slow motion the explosion of flour and biscuits is quite satisfying to watch, but their regard for safety leaves a lot to be desired.  Although their video contains a disclaimer that they had a nurse on the premises during filming, a pair of sunglasses and a bin liner is hardly considered to be safety clothing, and they are barefoot as well.

Anyone who has had the misfortune of mowing over a child’s toy, or a stick, will know that the shards fly out at quite a speed and they can be sharp having been shredded by the blades, so it is surprising that they did not at least wear shoes and thick trousers.

It is more shocking when you see them throwing microwave meals into the lawn mower, which have been heated beforehand.  Microwave lasagne is notorious for being similar in consistency to molten lava, and the plastic shards that accompany the flying food must be very painful should they make contact with your legs.  It seems that no one was badly hurt during filming, but it is quite uncomfortable at times, to watch them jumping out of the way of high speed food and plastic.

In America safety was considered a little more deeply, and both the filming and dropping was done from a distance in a garage, with boards to catch the flying debris.  The slow motion action is a lot more satisfying when the items are dropped from a height, as the blades have a chance to slice Christmas ornaments, keyboards and more are dropped into the waiting lawn mower, and it does a great job of destroying them – perhaps an alternative to a shredder for sensitive documents?  Those of you who are utterly sick of Disney’s Frozen will appreciate the video clip where figurines from the film are destroyed by the mower.

We wouldn’t recommend trying this at home, at least not without taking much better safety precautions and being aware of the clean-up activity required afterwards, but if you want to satisfy your curiosity about whether an item will mow or not the videos can be found here and here.
