Wood Splitters for This Winter

Weather men are predicting that this winter is going to be icy and stormy. Snow will fall and the temperatures will plummet – both conditions that are perfect for getting a roaring fire stoked up and in operation.

If you’ve prepared for the winter by getting your wood in, then you’ll most likely still need to split it. But don’t despair, there’s now a machine that will do that for you. In fact, there are three types of machines – the manual log splitter, the electric log splitter and the hydraulic log splitter.

Let’s look at the different types and why you may consider any of them.

Manual hydraulic log splitter

For under £100 you can invest in a manual log splitter that has an 8 tonne splitting force. It’s far easier to use a log splitter than it is to cut up logs using an axe. This particular log splitter is hydraulic and can handle logs up to 23” long.

Electric log splitter

Equipped with powerful electric motors, the electric log splitter makes preparing wood for a fire, an absolute doddle. Perfect for prepping for either wood burners or open fires, we have a wide range of brand names with prices between £29 and £579 (December 2014).

Petrol log splitters

Considered to be the king of log splitters, the petrol version of the log splitter can produce a splitting force of up to 12 tonnes. They can also be mobilised by being towed behind either an ATV or a garden tractor. The user is not limited on where they can use them either, as the dependence on the electric cable is removed when petrol is involved. They range in price from £29 to £1149.
