Get familiar with your soil

Pick it up and squeeze it. You’ll know whether it’s good. It should be a little crumbly and sticky with a sweetish smell. If the plants in it currently look healthy, then it’s good. If your soil looks dry, sandy or gritty then it could need some attention. Pull out some weeds and dig it with the spade to break it up a little. Although it’s hard work – it’s a worth the effort and it’ll burn off some calories.

Plant ready-grown flowers

Now that your soil is prepped, you can go off down to the garden centre and select a few bedding plants. These are temporary plants, so don’t get too caught up in what’s what. When you get them home, just pull them out of their plastic pots pull out the roots a little. Dig a hole and pop it in. Now press down the soil and water it.

Sow some seeds

If you’ve never had a go at this, you don’t know what fun and pleasure you’re missing out on. Get some large seeds, put them into some compost. Water it and push a few seeds into the soil. Flick some soil over the top and put it somewhere where you can monitor it on a daily basis. Soon you’ll see some shoots coming up.

Grow something delicious

Although edibles may be slightly higher when it comes to maintenance, they offer huge rewards. At the garden centre you can purchase fruit and veggie plants that are already started. You can just put them into the soil, and water. To become an expert, just keep trying different ones.

Let us know how you got on with your gardening weekend.
