Drumroll. Enter the garden shredder. This productive machine makes it possible to reduce shrub waste material for reuse around the garden.

The good thing is about shredding is that it’s actually a very wise and smart gardening investment. Not only will you save money but you should be able to give a good nutrient rich boost to your soil. If you prefer not to recycle the materials, then it will also save you the trouble of having to cut each stem down to the right size for refuse collection.

In addition, if refuse collection is your preferred method of disposal – then you have an addition reason to enjoy the shredder. If you’re in the position of having to pay for garden waste removal, then shrinking the material down to a few bags is going to be in your financial favour. A large pile of shrub cuttings can be decreased to just 2 buckets of chippings.

There are a number of different shredder types on the market including:

Impact or rapid shredders – although they might be noisy they are light. They also aren’t supplied with a collection box but it’s easy to add your own. Be sure to wear goggles and gloves.

Roller shredders – sometimes referred to as a quiet drum shredder or reduced gear shredders. Although they are heavier, they make excellent compost as they crush the stems against a blade and this enables the waste to decompose faster.

Petrol chippers – excellent for the larger garden they can handle far more debris. They might be heavier to move around but they can cut up larger branches.
