Summer Lawn Care

Summer Lawn Care

It’s at this time of year that lawns start to grow. As soon as growth begins, it’s time to start feeding them and performing other maintenance tasks such as attending to any bare patches. During the winter, a lawn does not grow much. However, once the spring weather arrives, it’s time to start mowing and you may find that you will need to sprinkle some lawn seeds over areas that were damaged during the winter time.

Once the cold weather is over, all lawns should be fed in order for them to maintain vitality and vigour. Feeding is also the perfect occasion to get up close and take a good look for pests, diseases and to apply moss killer. The best lawns are regularly maintained as opposed being left for too long and then needing complete renovation.

Here are some of the tasks that should be attended regularly to keep your lawn in good condition:

Mowing

This is one of the most important tasks that you’ll need to do when maintaining your lawn over the warmer weather. It’s what keeps the lawn looking good and in great health. Lawn mowers are available in a number of different styles and power choices.

Killing moss

Lawns that are not regularly scarified can become poorly drained and then develop moss. Once spring arrives, it’s time to remove the moss and reseed the lawn so that the grass does not leave any space for moss regrowth.

Feeding

At the end of March to the beginning of April is the first time you should apply fertiliser. Use it according to the instructions of the manufacturer. This will help the lawn to start growing and edge out moss and weeds. The best time to feed is when the soil is damp or when rain is due.

Quite often grass does not look so healthy over the summer as the heat and dryness can affect it. Throughout the months of May, June, July and August continue to apply feed and lightly water it in once a week or so.

Once August has passed, you should not be applying any more feed, manure or treatments to lawn. It could encourage too much growth and result in a damaged lawn when frost and colder weather come around.

Seeding

Once weeds and moss has been removed, it’s time to add seed to the areas of lawn where the grass has become sparse in growth. Again, be sure to water seeds in so that they begin to germinate, grow their roots and establish themselves as young grass plants.
