Pick the right lawn mower

This is by far the most important tip we have for you. There are a huge range of lawn mowers available to buy and if you have a large garden, your lawn mower will be your most relied upon garden tool. But where do you begin?

Mowing a large lawn could take hours and in the height of summer you will be looking at mowing at the very least once a week. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pick a lawn mower that is going to make your job as quick and easy as possible. For those large lawn sizes, we would only recommend ride on lawn mowers.

Ride on lawn mowers are not beneficial if you have a small garden. This is because you will never get to use the lawn mower to its full potential and therefore not worth spending the extra money on. But, if you do have a very large lawn, ride on lawn mowers will significantly help cut down your mowing time. We would also recommend that you choose between a cylinder or rotary model which will help give you a better cut. Ride on lawn mowers are a lot more expensive than other lawn mower types, so it’s vital that you really consider whether it’s worth it before you take the plunge.

Mow your grass frequently

We can understand that if you have a large lawn the thought of mowing it every week might be a little frustrating, but unfortunately if you want to keep your grass looking great, it’s going to have to be done.

The mowing season starts in March and continues through until October. The frequency of mowing will change with each of the seasons, so don’t worry, you won’t always be sat on your lawn mower. The height of summer is when you will be mowing the most, on average you will be looking at twice a week. I’m sure you can understand now why we would recommend one of the ride on lawn mowers.

In spring and autumn mowing frequency drops a little compared to the summer. To keep your lawn looking healthy, mowing once a week is necessary in the spring and autumn periods. The only time mowing is not really needed is in the winter. If your lawn is frozen or waterlogged, you’re off the hook.

Mowing technique.

Sitting on your ride on lawn mowers and actually cutting your grass is pretty simple and luckily there is not too much technique involved. There are two golden rules when it comes to mowing your grass and luckily for you we have already spoken about the first one. Mow frequently and cutting height, it doesn’t get simpler than that.

When you first start mowing your grass in the spring, it’s important to remember to set your cutting height to the highest setting and never cut more than one third off your grass at any one time. Any more than that and you will damage your grass. Each time you mow your grass you can gradually reduce the height until you reach a length you are happy with.
