Contrary to popular belief, some people just LOVE lawn mowing!

Here’s what we’ve learnt this grass cutting season:

Mowing a lawn gives us an immediate reward with a great feeling of accomplishment. Unlike other chores, the results of which cannot be enjoyed for hours at best, years and sometimes even decades later at worst.

The true lawn mowing pros can be judged for their level of achievement by the height of the grass on their lawn. Gardeners who are retired have far more time in many cases, so from a neighbour’s perspective they can be winning the mowing race.

If you feel that you’re struggling with the notion of loving to mow the lawn, then we’ve got some points to share that could help to change your perspective:

  • Mow in sections. Each section that you mow should be recognised for its own individual accomplishment. As you do so you can say to yourself ‘mo de lon’ in a French accent. This will help you to imagine that it’s a particularly fashionable and very de rigueur chore that only the most recognised people attend to. << Who said we didn’t have a sense of humour here in Cheltenham!
  • Use it as a lesson for your kids. Some children, particularly the teenage set, have waited for this time of year for many months. They envisioned sleeping in until 3pm each day. Show them that this isn’t possible by starting that lawn mower at 7.30am – just as your neighbours are heading out to work for the day. The children will thank you later on in life, when they know of this trick to play on their own offspring.
  • Take sandwiches and a quiche. Get a ride on mower so that you can pack up a picnic and take it with you to the end of the garden. Do some mowing first thing and then drive up to the end of your garden and enjoy the view of the house. Shake out a picnic blanket and place your picnic basket on it. Then sit down and enjoy lunch before continuing on into the afternoon. Please be warned, that we advise sticking to a soft drink such as lemon barley or orange squash for health and safety purposes.

See what we mean. Of course, doing chores doesn’t excite many of us, but by giving it a fun spin, it’s possible to add more enjoyment to the summer ritual of mowing the lawn.

In the meantime, enjoy your mowing. Time flies and summer will come to a close much sooner than you may imagine.
