The problem with having blunt blades on your mower is that it is more likely to rip and tear the grass as opposed to cutting it. By having sharp mower blades, you’ll also give the lawn a better chance at staying resistant to disease and healthy.

Although a common mistake, if the lawn is cut too short, then you’ll run the risk of making it turn brown. It’s the green of the grass blades that stores the food gathered from the roots and the sun. If it’s cut too short, it will grow faster and conversely, it will grow slower when it’s longer. This means that you won’t have to cut it so much during the summer.

Ideally you could also be using a mulching mower on your lawn. Returning the grass cuttings to the soil can deliver at least half of the nitrogen that is required for your lawn to retain its good health and greenness. By adding some compost during the spring months, you won’t even need to add fertiliser in the summer.

If you’re not getting a lot of rain, consider your grass as it needs up to 1 or 1.5 inches of water per week to stay healthy. If you do decide to give it a good watering, then don’t do this more than once per week. It’s far more effective to do this than to water it daily with lighter watering. By developing a root system that is deeper, it’s less likely to need regular watering.

Apply these professional lawn care tips and you’ll be able to watch your lawn thrive and flourish.
