Mowing your lawn over winter

If you would rather not leave your lawn to nature over the winter, it’s ok to give the grass a trim in the colder months.

If you’ve already prepared your petrol lawn mower for winter storage, you may want to use an electric mower or push lawn mower at this time of year. Prepare the area before mowing, collect any sticks or branches that might have fallen on the lawn. Give the lawn a light rake to clear away any garden debris.

The grass grows slowly in the winter and you shouldn’t need to mow that often to keep the lawn looking neat in the winter months. The conditions have to be just right for mowing; it’s important not to mow if the ground is too soft because this will cause damage to the grass and roots by ripping and tearing up the ground; it’s also important not to mow if the ground is frosty or frozen as this will break the grass blades and damage them; it is also important not walk on the grass when it’s frozen as breakage happens the same way.

Wait for a day when the ground is firm and the weather mild to ensure you protect the grass and roots. Cut the lawn at the highest grass setting, if you cut the grass on a low setting you run the risk of scalping the lawn, this can cause weeds and moss to grow in the patchy areas.

If you are applying a winter fertiliser add it directly after mowing and using a push spreader will aid even distribution.
