Lawn care gifts for Christmas – A cut above the rest

Some people say that if there’s an electrical cord attached to it, then it’s not a real present. Others hold the opposite view and yearn for power tools, domestic equipment and gardening gear at Christmas and birthdays, because they like to get something they can use. For the keen gardener in your life there is a huge range of lawn care and garden maintenance items available at a variety of price points, so there is something to suit everyone.

If you are looking for gifts for an older person you could make a real difference by getting them a self-propelled, robotic or even riding lawnmower to replace an old and heavy push along model. Prices can range from under £200 for a self-propelled petrol mower, into thousands of pounds for a top of the range riding lawn mower; so do consider joining forces with other family members to get a really good model as a joint present.

Leaf blowers are also a nice present for those that are getting a bit long in the tooth, as they take the effort out of raking and can also be used on hard surfaces like decking, patios and pavements. These labour saving devices are ideal for those with lessening mobility and physical strength, as they allow that person to maintain some independence and continue doing those garden tasks without battling cumbersome equipment.

If the lawn mower does not need replacing, consider paying for a full service and sharpening of the blades instead. If you are able to book this for them, it makes an all-around great present, taking a chore off their hands and contributing towards the maintenance of their equipment. You could even go as far as printing some personal vouchers for mowing their lawn, as they can be used all year round and will be appreciated by anyone who may have periods of ill health, or just need a hand from time to time.

Other lawn care items that are always needed are seed and fertiliser, and sometimes these are very heavy to carry. Purchasing these and putting them in the right place is always appreciated by the keen gardener who is not able to carry heavy loads anymore; vouchers for spreading fertiliser and helping with the springtime jobs would also be gratefully received.

Families with sporty children often have problems with certain patches of their lawns, as they are used for practicing penalty taking, golf swings, tennis serves and all manner of other physical activities. Lawn seed is not expensive to buy, but you can make some parents very happy by doing some research into the best type of grass for their garden and purchasing some seed for them. Granted, it might be the type of job they are thinking of doing anyway, but putting some thought and effort into a gift will make sure you are remembered for it.

Gardening equipment may not seem like the most exciting gift, but for those with a real passion for their outdoor plot anything that helps them is going to be well received. If your intended recipient is hard to buy for and has just replaced any old machinery, you could consider paying for a few sessions from a gardener, or for membership of a garden centre or the RHS. This is the type of gift that keeps on giving, and each time your recipient attends an event, or has a session with a gardener, they will remember you and be thankful for your thought and effort in getting them a present they’ll really love.
