Winter weather is not easy for any lawn to cope with. By following the advice here, you’ll soon be able to enjoy a recovered lawn that is green lush and absolutely flourishing.

It’s during the colder months that grass become inactive. It will generally stop growing and it will look far from its best. It can also suffer from damage that is caused by ice, frost, snow, drainage issues etc. It’s for this reason that you need to give it some care and maintenance in the springtime.

Clear Debris

It’s important that you allow the turf to dry out before starting to work on it. If it’s wet it can suffer more damage as the roots can easily be pulled up. Once your lawn is dry, it’s best to start with a rake to help the soil to get some air. The rake will also help to remove some of the debris that would have accumulated over winter.

The soil and grass blades will be opened up and therefore more air can circulate. It’s important to allow good air circulation so that turf cannot develop fungal diseases that are attracted to damp and swampy areas.

Post-Winter Scarification

Now is the time to scarify your lawn. Over winter moss and thatch would have increased and it will now be affecting the growth of your grass blades. However, if there is still a chance of frost, put this task on hold until better weather comes. If you have extensive moss, then you may want to apply a moss killer 14 to 21 days before scarifying the lawn. The most successful scarification sessions occur when the lawn is a little damp and newly mown. You can perform the task with a hand spring bok rake or a powered scarifier.

With regular lawn care and maintenance you’ll be helping your garden to look its very best.
