Before we get started, it’s important to know that there are 5 very important points to take into account:

  • What do you need the generator for?
  • What to consider when it comes to noise
  • Does the generator need to be moved?
  • How long do you need to run it for?
  • What type of fuel do you prefer to use to power it?

All you need to know about generator power

The portable generator ranges from 1KVA to 5 o 6KVA. KVA is an acronym for Kilo Volt Amps, and the term Watts will usually be used when referring to how much power is used and consumed. To make things easier, remember that a 1KVA generator would be rated at 900 watts, in which case that is the maximum you can load the generator.

900 watts is enough to power a laptop, a television and some lights, but is not powerful enough to run something like a kettle, a toaster oven or a microwave. You can check your appliances to find out how many watts they need to power them.

To discover how many watts your need your generator to produce, you may need to run a load test. Some appliances run with a motor, so you may need to check whether the motor requires an additional start-up current which will reflect in your wattage needs.

In addition you’ll need to consider whether you need ‘clean power’ in order to run something like a laptop or a flat screen television. This type of power is more stable and consistent, whereas a kettle would be happy using more unstable power and so would lights, even though they may dim. The computer may even shut down if it is not happy with the ‘sine’ waves in the power.

Generator Noise

The human ear is particularly sensitive and prefers a quieter generator: It’s not rocket science to understand that the average person doesn’t want to hear loud droning in the background!

Generator Portability

Before purchasing your generator, check the size and weight of the model you are interested in. You will need to ensure that you can carry it. Keep in mind that just one handle on it means that it has been designed to be lifted by just one person.

How Long Does it Need to Run For?

If you need the generator to run for hours and hours, then you’ll need to get one with the right sized fuel tank.

Generator Fuel

There are 3 types of fuel used in generators, petrol, LPG and diesel. Keep in mind that diesel engines are often louder.
