How to Pressure Wash a Deck

A wooden deck will always need regular maintenance such as pressure washing. Without performing this task, you’ll find that mould, mildew and dirt will gradually start to build up on your deck and get trapped in the wood. This can make it slippery and it will also look a bit of an eyesore in your otherwise pretty and tidy garden.

Although spending the afternoon on the sunbed with a good book, can sometimes appear to be far more enticing, you’ll find that this job won’t take long with a good pressure washer. In fact, before you know it you could have transformed your deck to look how it was when it was first installed. Brand new.

We recommend that a deck is washed annually, but if you’re a heavy user of it or it’s situated beneath the shade of trees, you may find that you need to do it more often. Here are our top tips on how to pressure wash a deck:

  1. Get your gear on. You should be wearing googles, closed shoes and gloves. This is very important if you have added any chemicals to your pressure washer.
  2. In fact, you may even need to protect any plants that are in the vicinity of your washing action. Check the instructions of the cleaning solution and any guidelines before you begin.
  3. Hold the pressure washer nozzle so that it will spray away from you. You don’t want any of the spray going up in your face which it may do unless the nozzle is at an angle of between 40 and 60 degrees to the wood.
  4. Use the nozzle in a gentle sweeping motion to go back and forth across the deck.
  5. The washer should be held around one foot away from the deck surface.
  6. Start at the back corners and bring the debris forward to the front edge.
  7. Allow to dry for up to 24 hours.

Overall there’s not a lot to it and you can get it done in just one afternoon. Once the job has finished, then you’ll be ready for some BBQ and hospitality fun.
