Here’s how:

  1. Allow your grass to grow longer. Not only will it have longer roots, therefore it will be able to reach deeper into the ground for moisture, but it will also provide a natural shade for the soil. Shaded soil loses less moisture than that which is exposed to the sun. You can allow your grass to grow longer by raising your mower deck by a few inches before you mow.
  2. Mulch the lawn. Instead of throwing away the clippings, allow them to deliver all their natural goodness and nutrients to the grass. Again, your lawn can enjoy that extra shade that this will give, to keep it from drying out in the summer sunshine.
  3. Maintain a sharp blade for cleaner cuts and less pulling of grass. Grass with less stress won’t need so much water to look good. Go for 3 or 4 sharpening’s over the course of the season and your mower blades should be in good shape.
  4. Keep your mower deck clean. Grass clippings are very sticky and will cling to the underside of your mower deck if you allow them to. However, they need to be removed to allow a good airflow through. This will make it easier to cut taller grass.

The lush perfect lawn isn’t reliant just on water to keep it that way, it’s also how you cut it and the type of care you give it. Approach it in a way to retain as much moisture as available and you’ll be looking out over a very green and beautiful lawn before you know it.
