Just as regular mowing is a principle part of garden horticulture, hedge trimming plays a similar role. Without it, there will soon be untidy and unruly branches that can spoil a gardens general outlook.

Your garden will rapidly deteriorate in its look as hedges creep in at the sides, leaving you with less space to enjoy. They can even lead to spats with neighbours, it’s for this reason that a hedge trimmer is a vital piece of gardening equipment.

If you haven’t owned one before, then it might be that you need a point in the right direction. Let’s look at hedge trimmers that may suit the bill.

A variety of power sources for hedge trimmers

There are several different types of hedge trimmers when it comes to the power source that they use. Some run from corded electric, others are battery powered and some are petrol powered. Each of these suit different situations.

Electric Corded Hedge Trimmers

Most suited to smaller gardens due to access limitations from the cord, these machines are generally lightweight and very affordable. They are simple to use and you won’t suffer from any fumes or excessive noise. Purchasing decisions should be based on length of cord and you may also want to pick up a residual-current circuit breakers (RCCB) at the same time in case there are any accidents with cutting through the cable.

We suggest opting for a Bosch AHS 45-16 or even a Flymo Easicut due to ease of operation.

Battery-Powered Hedge Trimmers

Offering the same quiet operation, these models free the user from the restraints of the cord. You can venture further afield as you trim your border hedges. Before you buy check how long the battery will last as there is nothing so frustrating as having to stop mid flow for a battery recharge.

Bosch play another part in the cordless hedge trimmer arena with ideal machines being the Bosch AHS45-15LI and the Bosch AHS 41.

Petrol Hedge Trimmers

Typically used by those with a larger garden and gardening professionals, these machines deliver substantial cutting power and freedom from needing an electrical power socket. However, expect these to weigh more, be noisier and produce engine emissions. Requiring more maintenance, they are better suited to the more experienced hedge trimming gardener.
