The 1st sign of warmer weather and we can’t wait to get out in the garden. A recent UK survey showed that an average of £30,000 is spent on our gardens in a lifetime.

Gardening budgets can be kept down by:

  • Taking cuttings from friends and relatives gardens
  • Collecting seeds and storing them
  • Using recycled objects as planters
  • Free pallet wood can be used to make furniture, planters and borders
  • Making your own compost and compost bin
  • Mulching
  • Buying shrubs and perennials instead of annuals

Before you start

One of the 1st garden tasks will be to clear leaves and debris from the paths, lawns and patios.

We recommend the Greenworks G40ABK2 40v Axial Blower and the Greenworks G40DC40 40v Cordless Pressure Washer, the battery and charger included with the blower will also run the Greenworks pressure washer.

Style ideas for the summer

There is a continuing trend in ‘growing your own’, producing your own fruit and veg can not only give you a great sense of achievement, it often tastes better too. Planting can be done in anything from an old welly to a worn-out tyre, but a simple bed can be created from timber and looks great too.

See this RHS link for more details – Raised Beds

Cinder blocks are an inexpensive way to bring colour and detail the garden. Blocks can be painted with masonry paint in contrasting yellows and blues, using stencils or painting chevrons or zig zags can give a modern finish.

For a modern, sophisticated look the cinder blocks can be grouped and left natural or painted in neutral colours. The hollow of the brick can be used for planting rockery plants or succulents or for an ambient feel in the evening, candles placed in random nooks.

The traditional striped lawn doesn’t have to be about straight parallel lines, if you’re feeling more ambitious the grass can be cut into zig-zags, circles or unique patterns.

We recommend the Allett Liberty 30 Cordless Cylinder Mower or the Hayter Spirit 41 Push Petrol Rear Roller Lawn mower for creating your lawn art.

Topiary doesn’t have to be giant bushes in the shape of peacocks, it can be used to create simple lines and depth to your garden.

Hedges can be cut to form smooth angles, hedges planted parallel but at different heights can create a sleek look to mark boundaries.

Potted buxus and bay can be placed uniformed beside entrances or along paths, they also can be placed at random or grouped to create seclusion or feature areas.

We recommend EGO Grass Shear/Shrub Trimmer Kit for tidying and maintenance of small bushes and the Stihl HS87 T Petrol Hedge Trimmer for forming smooth angled lines of boundary hedges.

Whether you have a new or a well-established garden it can be added to, improved or completely re-modelled and remember that there are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.
