Early Springtime Lawn Care Tips

It’s essential to start preparing your lawn early. Just as soon as the ground has thawed, then take a walk on it to survey whether there are any bald patches or collections of weeds.

If the soil appears to be firm and compact, then it’s important that it is aerated to enable it to get the nutrients, water and oxygen required for it to flourish. If you have a rider mower, then you may want to invest in an aerator spreader.

Check whether your soil is clay or acidic, so that you can raise the pH level by adding lime to it. Soil that is too alkaline will benefit from adding sulphur to it.

Another way to improve the health of your soil is to spread a thin layer of compost over it. It shouldn’t be so thick as to cover the grass, but just enough to be around the roots between the blades of grass.

Fertilizing

Fertilising the lawn delivers excellent benefits, and this can be achieved either through mulching or by adding commercial fertiliser. There will be better growth which will crowd out the weeds. Once your grass has started to grow for the year, this is the time to add fertiliser.

Once summer starts, the grass might not grow so much and therefore you won’t need to add any fertiliser. Your second addition should be in early to mid-autumn.

Watering

If you’ve added new grass seed, then be sure to water them. However, you don’t want to add too much water and risk washing the seeds away. Use a spray nozzle to skilfully control the addition of moisture to the lawn. Even just once a week is enough.

Applying the water slowly will ensure that it soaks into the ground. This will encourage the roots to grow deeper and therefore improve the resilience of your grass.

Weeds

Any large patches of weeds need to be removed and grass seed added in their place. Once the grass is growing well, it won’t be possible for the weeds to perform as well as there won’t be space for the. If you wish to use a weed killer, ensure that it’s one that is eco-friendly. But ensure that you don’t use it until your new grass seeds have sprouted and taken a good hold.

Before you know it, your grass will be flourishing for a very green and healthy summer.
