Choosing Hedge Trimmers

Tips for Choosing Hedge Trimmers

Modern times have brought modern tools along with them. No longer is it necessary to build a collection of blisters from using manual hedge trimmers. There is now a powered version available that will make it a very much faster garden task to attend to.

However, before dialling us up and putting your order in for the latest models available, it’s certainly worth thinking about what your needs are as there really is quite a variety on offer. Here’s what you need to consider:

  • What will you be required to trim? Have you got a number of bushes or is there just one long hedge that needs to be tidied up? If you have a lot of trimming to do, then purchasing a cordless electric trimmer might not give you the results that you want. It may only last a short period of time before needing a recharge of batteries, and this could prove to be irritating. However, if you’ll just need to trim here and trim there quickly, then this could well prove to be the best choice.
  • Another key question to ask is about the height of your hedge. If you’ve got a particularly high hedge then you will be in a position where you have to hold the trimmer up high. Unless you’re quite a fitness buff, then selecting a light trimmer could be the right option due to the weight of the machine.
  • Although electric trimmers have their plus points, being able to reach the end of a very long garden is not one of their capabilities.
  • If you’re a budding topiarist and have plans to make shaped bushes in the form of your child’s favourite Disney characters then you will need to select a shorter blade on your hedge trimmer. A longer blade is more effective when it comes to straight cuts.

You may have noticed that some hedge trimmers have wide openings and some have narrow ones. This is because in some situations there is a need to cut many small twigs at once, and this is when the wider trimmer will come into its own. The narrow one is for smaller cuts.

You may also see some models that have double cutting blades. This is so that they will cut when you go forwards or backwards on your swing and they are great for cutting hedges that need extra shaping or for a hedge that is at chest height. Choose a longer blade for hedges that are higher or deeper so that you can avoid working on a ladder.

The single blade hedge trimmer is lighter than the double and in some cases it’s possible to source them with an attachment to collect clippings.
